"those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it" - George Santayana

At the #FamiliesBelongTogetherMarch, we walked past the @jamuseum’s enlarged executive order that sent Japanese Americans to internment camps during WWII. A stark reminder that-

Where the Mind is without fear

"Where the mind is without fear"
by Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by
Narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into
The dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening
Thought and action -
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

A Report on Migrant Detention in McAllen TX

6/28/2018

The soul of our country is literally drowning in the tears of mothers and children crying in the night in cages after being torn from each other by uniformed guards, with no explanation and little or no hope of reunion.  Men are begging for the simple decency of being allowed to take a shower.  Children huddle in cages on gym mats under thin space blankets staring shellshocked into space with no books, games, or relief from the fear and boredom.  As Elizabeth Warren put it in her post on Facebook about her visit to the detention center in McAllen  "The stench – body odor and fear – hits the second the door is opened."
CNN published an investigative report on June 21st detailing just some of the shocking abuses these children are experiencing in these facilities.  Allegations include unsanitary conditions, exposing children to dangerous levels of heat without a\c, inhumane restraint use, forced medication without proper parental consent, depriving children of clothes, taunting, abuse, and threats.  It's truly shocking to consider that this is happening on US soil.

American Academy of Pediatrics Dr. Colleen Kraft says that separating families at the border is "a form of child abuse".  In the interview below she details what she saw when she visited one of these facilities caring for children under the age of 12, and explains the potentially devastating long term affects these children may face:
These children and adults will be living with emotional trauma from being subjected to this treatment for decades to come.  Traumatized by this system, unfamiliar with the procedures involved, and without any sort of legal representation, parents and children stand very little chance of getting any sort of due process or seeing their family again.  As Elizabeth Warren pointed out "this is far from over".  The repercussions of these abuses will be unfolding for decades to come.

Please contact your Elected Officials at Local, State, and National levels and demand that these human rights abuses end.

Amnesia and silence are complicity

6/27/2018

The dark parallels between early Nazi Germany and the situation occurring along the US\Mexico border are becoming impossible to ignore.   Our amnesia and our silence are complicity with these unfolding atrocities.

Holocaust historian Andrea Pitzer author of "One Long Night" on whether it is fair to call the camps where migrants and refugees are being detained Concentration Camps:

Yes, of course they're concentration camps. They aren't the unique subset of death camps that were invented by the Nazis for genocide, or even Arctic Gulag camps built for hard labor. But they're camps created to punish a whole class of civilians via mass detention without trial. https://t.co/c8edQna4Vf

In an article published in the Times of Israel, she further elaborates:

“We have indications dating back to August that the separation policy was being looked at as a punitive measure — in the hopes that it would deter entry,” she wrote in an email.

“So we have punitive detention being used against asylum seekers, adults and children alike,” Pitzer said. “It’s a policy that wasn’t in place before under other administrations, and there’s no law requiring it. It wasn’t adopted as an emergency measure to deal with a new problem or a massive influx. People are being deported without their children, which is as punitive a measure as one can imagine. What can you take from people who have nothing? Their children.”

Here is also the original opinion piece that Andrea Pitzer wrote that further elaborates why she believes that these camps are early incarnations of Auschwitz published by HAARETZ of Israel.
